Page Speed Question

I am currently designing a site dealing with patios. Every page loads in under 12 seconds, which I think is pretty decent, EXCEPT... the examples page. The examples page contains photos of patios. That page loads in about 20-25 sec (on a 28.8). Is that an ok speed, considering it is only for one page. Personally, would you wait that long for 1 page to load? Image qaulity means a lot so I do not want to sacrifice it for smaller photo sizes. Thanks in advance!

In all honesty, I would not wait 20-25 seconds for one page to load. Usually after about 15 seconds, if there are still problems with loading, I get impatient and leave the site completely.

I suggest you let the user know (for your EXAMPLE pages) that those pages contain large bits of data and will take time to load, this way the user knows what he is getting into.

Can you post a URL that has these images on it? The ones you want to use please.

The reason I ask is that their are lot's of ways to create a .gif or .jpg. Especially photoes that are .jpg and how to properly use the algorythums for each file format.

With some carefull tweaking it might be possible to reduce your load times with smaller images. The notion that I used xyz to do the files so they must be as small as possible is not always true http://geekvillage.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

The new ones are 4.1K and 4.9K The old ones were twice as large (about 9K) In theory you new images make the page load twice as fast.

I use Fireworks and crank down the "Quality" setting while I'm looking at 4 versions of the same images. I play with each version untill I reach a "working compramise"

Yours were rather easy to crank down in file size as the degredation in the image does not appear on the "product" very much. It's all about file size verses image quality and how much your client can tolerate.

If these were images for a plastic surgeon it's a whole nother story.

yeah Fireworks is great for image optimisation... you can also use Ulead's SmartSaver Pro which is a stand alone app as well as a plugin for Adobe Photoshop

personally 20 - 25 secs would be an okay time... really depends on your visitors... if there are looking for patios they will wait...

i have pages in the load time of 55 - 75 secs and the visitors do wait for it to load

as i am using GIF Animator and JPG Wizard as image optimizer, i wonder whether all the software(img opt) around produce the same result?(same quality with same file size?) or Fireworks is a better one that produces same quality with smaller file size?

The easiest way to find "image bloat" I have found is www.gifwizard.com . Just enter your website url (in the top input box) and click on "Start Free Website Analysis." It checks your site and gives you a total efficiency of html, gifs and jpegs for the whole site. The most useful to me is the "Images sorted by efficiency" report section which shows each image's efficiency. (Note - this part of the report is only for the ONE page of the URL you entered.)
I also use Ulead's Smart Saver pro to then optimize each image that needs it. I am currently trying HTML Shrinker - http://pico.i-us.com - for HTML optimization.

notibrian - Before I found Smart Saver pro, I used several web-based graphics optimizers. In my experience, the web-based services did not perform as well as Smart Saver. I usually lost image quality at the same file size, than with Ulead's product. I think this is primarily due to having more control over which colors are eliminated. (I tried the web-based services the other day and compared them to Smart Saver's, on a particular image I was not happy with, and found this held true.) Plus, it is much easier and quicker to do this on your machine, rather than on a web server. (Especially when optimizing several graphics.)

It only took 15 seconds or so for it to load with me, and I'd say my connetion is slow (my pc is newish, but always crashes). But I had no advert bars or icq etc so if someone had something like that it'd slow them down. If it was to take over 30 seconds to load, I'd probably refresh thinking theres a mistake and it's gonna stuff up, or look in another window (I usually have about 2 or 3 windows on the net at once, so I can read while loading)
