Question PHP as CGI?

I'm stumped. For some reason, Interland (my current host for DailyStarts.Com) runs PHP as a CGI. Why on God's green earth you would do that is beyond me, but for some reason, they think its best.

Besides being just plain silly, this creates a lot of problems for scripts. You have to CHMOD them, add paths in, you only get 500 Server Errors, etc.. I can't seem to get half my scripts to work, even when I do it all right, and I can never tell what or where the problem is, because I just get a 500 Server Error (most of these scripts are ones I've written and used elsewhere several times, so I'm certain its not the script itself).

My question is: Does anyone know how to deal with this properly? Are there any resources out there on how to make PHP work when your host runs it as a CGI?

Thanks in advance..
