Any suggestions for low cost dedicated hosting? I'm looking for something with reasonable bandwidth pricing, good support, no control panel (I want to use Webmin, not some home grown control panel that is restrictive), and free DNS services. No RAQs.

I got a dedicated server with Dialtone over the summer, and on the phone the dedicated server consultant was just trying to sell me on the server. I don't blame him for this, except that he promised me that I could use their DNS server until I set up my own. So I setup my domains to point to their DNS servers, and put in a request to have them set it up to work. The domains begin to point to their DNS servers, no response. Finally I got a response saying that I needed to setup my own DNS server. I called them up, and was told the same thing, ever after explaining my situation. Well, by that time my site had been down for a few days, and I wasn't about to mess around and try to figure out my DNS in that time period, so I promptly switched to Interland and have been fairly satisfied there. If you're looking for reasonable bandwidth pricing, I can tell you this... I go well over my 100 GB limit every month on Interland and I've never been charged. Maybe I will be at a later date, but so far I think it's pretty cool.

http://dialtoneinternet.com/ may have some older boxes that would work for you. These are not presently advertised but have been in the past. It might be worth an email or two http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif I'm not a reseller. Just a happy camper.
6 Months ago they had a special and for the grand total of $177 per month I have a P200 with 196 MB of RAM and a 4 GB IDE drive. Great support, uptime, peering, speed, and one of the best GUI control panels I have ever seen. I don't know if webmin would break their GUI but you could ask. Includes your very own DNS and as many free IPs as you can use and set up time for each takes about 15 seconds. The following site is on my server: http://www.postcard4me.com/ HTH ------------------ Best regards, Steve_S Administrator/Owner/Webmaster/Tribal Chief Read what our Members think of geek/talk. I've been checking them out too thanks to singloon. Yup.their pricing and offers so far are the best I've checked against others. However, I'm always wondering about support and service turnaround time.

hey Ex http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif
well service and support are great - the reason why is venturesonline.com is co owned by the owner of my previous web host ultraspeedusa.com which was sold to burst.net http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif i do most of my support via icq with both ultraspeedusa.com before the sale and now with venturesonline.com i ordered my server yesterday and they are setting it up today turnaround time ain't gonna be as fast as with my host before that , rackspace.com understandably considering the price It takes 5 - 7 days from order of the server to the setup of it. I already recommended venturesonline.com to Martin from www.atforumz.com who's on similar server as the one i am getting but with more bandwidth ------------------[*]Australian Neon Genesis Evangelion[*]film - writers - reviewers - reporters - designers[*]FanBuy.com indevelopment |

Unsure on bandwidth (it's part of the hosting restructuring I'm doing in attempt to cut hosting costs 50-70%). I'm thinking a single PIII processor with at least 512MB of RAM. Haven't really decided on a price yet.

It's just kind of like a spare for excess.

I would have to recommend Wizards Hosting. Carlos (the owner) offers good support and is the cpanel design for VDI's CPanel. Their website is http://www.wizardshosting.com. Contact Carlos at sales@wizardshosting.com for information on dedicated servers.

I'm trying out servercentral.net now; they have an Advanced Virtual Server for $235 a month. 800 MB disk space, unlimited bandwidth usage (the guy said 200 GB is ok; I need that much transfer for www.animewallpapers.com).
I am allowed something like 64 concurrent Apache processes (96 total). I have "virtual root access" to this server, which is kind of like root on a dedicated server, but not exactly: - I can't bind services to ports <1024, so for example I cannot run a web server other than Apache. - I can add FTP/mail accounts, but I can't add shell accounts. (They say it's for security reasons.) This is a nice "middle ground" between virtual hosting and dedicated hosting though - I'm at the point where my virtual host kicks me out saying I'm too big, but I can't quite afford a dedicated server. |
