After having some pretty serious issues with web servering companies, I have decided to move my domains to a dedicated server. This is a completely new area for me and I would really appreciate some advice. I don't know if I feel comfortable having my own box (which I would love) and on the flip side, I really do not have a favorite hosting company that has dedicated servers.

Can anyone give me some advice on this? Do most people start off with a hosting company doing it or do they just start off with their own box? If I have a hosting company host it, can I install whatever I want on it (ie if I want to upgrade from php3 to php4 can I just do it? Do you get full access?) If you have a box at home, what kind of lines are best?
