View Full Version : What's the story on About.com Luna Network?

Are they accepting new affiliates, or just ignoring all applications? I've been trying to get in with two of my sites but never got so much as an acknowledgement of my application.

SSacobie

I never got an acknowledgement either. I did, however, later on receive spam regarding some new program About was offering, indicating they're building a database with their applications.

demae

Yeah, I got some e-mail solicitation from about.com too that resulted from my Luna Network application.

If they're building a database of the applications, maybe it means that they intend to contact us later when things get better?

The Luna program is going through lots of changes right now ... they're in the process of creating and sending out new adcode to all of their members, so they're probably waiting until all of that is done before accepting new applications. I don't know for sure, just a guess. http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

Changes, like the stats not working again. I can't see how some companies can give up to the second, or up to the day stats and these guys take 2 months to tell you what you have earned. I have been with them since late October and still have no idea if it was a good move because I haven't got a breakdown of what I have earned or the value of the banners sold, it may all be a big mistake on my behalf but they have me for 3 months until I find out if it is and another 2 months if I decide to change, all the time maybe making less than I could be elsewhere.

I will be much happier when I see some $$$ figures and if they went to a decent stats system that enables you to get daily feedback.

i emailed me Luna rep and asked again whether new anime sites are being accepted and the indication is not at the moment - but she was more definite about the sci-fi movie/tv site i was referring - so depends on the category i suppose

i agree that i would love daily stats reports which i do know is possible since another network i was with also used doubleclick dart and provided site's access to daily stats.

I see mostly negative comments on this forum.. I disagree with all of you.

I admit, they take long to tell u how much you made, but they are the best paying CPM network out there! No Doubt!

For December 2000, I received pay for $9,900+ USD. I am very happy with them. Just for you guys to know, It's freewareworld.com thats running the ads.

Wow... every webmaster's dream...

BTW, have you actually received and cashed the check, or is that $9900 just on your online stats display?

We have sites on Luna and have made/rec'd over $50k/month for about 6 mos now.

I've been with them since May and have found them to be totally honest. I can't say what I've made for two reasons - 1) confidentiality agreement, 2) you wouldn't believe me. One month I found the decimal point was one digit too far to the right.

I'm expecting the crash, though it didn't happen this month.

I have been amazed at the criticsms I've seen - most made by non-members who didn't like their branding box. Well, IMO an About.com brand is a great brand to have. They are Yahoo with intelligent life.

I have made far more money with About than anyone else (by a long way) so I mostly have good things to say.

I just wanted to check with other Luna webmasters about revenue in December. I received my statement this morning and it is way down - less than half November plus I didn't get anything for partnership fees. I know they did away with the old partnership box but I though the new nav bar I put up was its replacement.

I am disappointed because I thought December with its Christmas advertisers was going to be a bumper month - fingers crossed for January.

holy moses US$9900/month, 50k/month etc... i didn't make any where near as much, but i did make 10% more money in Dec 2000 than i did in Nov 2000, so i am happy http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif and i had a better sellout % in Dec than Nov - but specifics i can not reveal

what kicks me is if i didn't pull my other sites out of Luna for eUniverse i would of made 2 1/2 times more than i have up to now

what's worse most of the money i made now has to go into fixing all 3 of my ****py pcs that all decided to retire simultaneously http://geekvillage.com/ubb/frown.gif

Paperboy: Haven't even got my Novemeber stats yet, how did you get December ??

robot: I have no problem with their branding box, infact I an redesigning my whole site to make it look much like the baranding box to get a nice flow and sameness.

Hopefully some answers when I get home tonight in the mail.

I have found them to be rather disorganized, as if everyone was changing positions all the time, and they needed reminding here and there. But it's very exciting at the end of each month seeing what you've made.

Guru: I've seen complaints on other boards about their "branding". As long as they find your account and keep their advertisers I predict that you will be happy like the rest of us.

December was better than November on one of my sites, worse on the other. Results appear to depend on the "channel".

guruchoc, i only got my Dec stats a couple of hours ago..

as to the branding nav bar it fits into my site nicely - although i did redesign my site the weeks prior to activating on Luna network

Got my stats now I am at home.

Total Impressions Served: 1,319,029

Total Impressions Sold: 883,922

Total Barter Impressions Accrued: 435,107

Net Effective CPM: $0.72

Total Sell Out Rate: 67%

Not as good as I had hoped for but at least it just covered my running costs.

demae
01-29-2001, 09:10 PM
Sounds like you guys are getting mixed results for the Luna Network. GuruChoc is getting mediocre CPM, while Kaumil is getting very rich.

Dependent on what topic area of about.com you're in, I suppose? (Why do I get the feeling that anime is one of the less valuable topics...)

Arie

I'm generally happy with them, but yes, they are in a flux, and sometimes you need to remind them of things.

My December stats were good:

Total Impressions Served: 1,107,315

Total Impressions Sold: 1,000,681

Total Barter Impressions Accrued: 106,634

Total Sell Out Rate: 90%

While CPM increased 50% over Novembers. I won't publish the CPM because of the contract, but it was several dollars.

GuruChoc:

EEEEEEEE.. .72 CPM? thats the reason i guess.. look at mine:

Total Impressions Served: 5,362,862
Total Impressions Sold: 3,828,671
Total Barter Impressions Accrued: 1,534,191
Net Effective CPM: $1.86
Total Sell Out Rate: 71%

I had a significantly higher CPM rate than you. But I am in the Freeware/Shareware topic, which means it must be more popular than your category.

I wonder why they arent' accepting my gaming site? Robert from SI... could you comment on this hehe, you stole 27,000,000 impressions :P hehe joking..

Arie: I didn't publish what my CPM rate was that I am getting paid for my banners as it is a 3 tierd payment scale anyway, just what the effective rate is, I don't think that breaks the NDA.

Now with 435000 barter impressions I better make a better looking banner than I did a month ago to use them up, all of you look out for my banner on your site, I'm about to flood the market http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif, maybe "Punch the ROM" http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

for me they still have only run a small % of my barter impressions - in my doubleclick dart stats for the barter impressions i have 2 insertions for my barter banners

one for ~ 390,000 and another for Dec 2000 ~ 169,000 of that only 36,000 of my banners have been used ?

well it seems the sci-fi site i referred is being accepted and is awaiting the contract to be sent - so at least we know that category is still open http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

OK, I think I understand... Anyway, my CPM for Dec. was $3.98

In Oct/Nov we displayed 346K barter bannners with a 0.30% CTR.

In Dec. 719K - 0.42% CTR

Jan/Mar is running now. 798K booked, 29K delivered so far (0.94% CTR)

I think I've mentioned this before but it bears repeating.....

We've met (and worked with) many, many networks. About.com is absolutely top notch.

Their management understands what it take to earn profit on the net...not just generate revenue or build market share.

If you check their performance over the recent market correction you'll see that they have come through it much better than most other large net concerns.

If you are looking to hang your hat on a larger network you'll do as good as can be with About.

They accepted my site, dosgames.com ... however they contacted me directly to recruit me, so they may not be accepting new applications.

As for CPM to expect I can't say exactly due to the NDA but I will say that it is about 3x what I was getting with Burst. About does seem very disorganized at times but they do pay a relatively high CPM (more than I could get anywhere else, I think) and I've always been paid so far.
