* MSN recently dropped support for the Inktomi (i.e., HotBot)
database and now displays LookSmart results first, followed by AltaVista results. Links to RealNames and DirectHit are also provided at the top and the side for many searches. As of the first of October, the MSN Web Page results appear to match AltaVista exactly. Therefore, top rankings in AltaVista should now generate even more traffic. The MSN switch to LookSmart/AltaVista probably explains why MSN submissions were rejected at random last month, driving many Web marketers crazy. Submissions to MSN now go to the LookSmart directory. If you're already in LookSmart, you don't need to bother with submitting to MSN. In addition, if you submit to AltaVista, you'll automatically be in the MSN version. |

David,
Thanks for the tip!!! This one caught me napping. I need to see what's up and check out what else may be new with the Inktomi family. MSN was one of about 7 or 8 major players in the Intomi Family. I need to do some home work on this. Altavista was always one of my favorite databases, I wonder how much it is changing now that is "spun off" from the Compaq-Digital family. I'll be seeing what I can find out. Thanks again for the heads up info. ------------------ Regards from your forum moderator ..... AltaVista has been the super powered geek friendly search engine from the start. In 1995 DEC, (Digital Equipment Corp), created it to show they had the biggest, baddest computers.
In early 1999 AltaVista became the property of Compaq as they bought up, merged with DEC. In August '99, Compaq spun off and sold off the major share of AltaVista to CMGI, Inc, which is supposed to be a "media company" not a computer company. We can only hope they don't get too "cutesy" with it and have it loose its power. There's goes the neighborhood http://www.very-cool-stuff.com/ubb/frown.gif |
