On-page seo means you have to do every thing in side your page & do every thing out side of your page called off-page seo.

Both On-page and Off-page SEO are important
* On page SEO means optimizing every element on the page to receive the highest probability of ranking on a particular keyword. It’s taking the existing content, or creating new content to optimize the pages.
* Off page SEO refers to techniques that can be used to improve the position of a web site in the search engine results.

You cannot favor one over the other, as with the common clash in Corporates "Sales team vs Marketing teams" in reality both are important and equally important. But even more so is the importance of cooperation between both these teams.

Like'wise in terms of SEO both on page (to impress incoming visitors and to make it possible for off-page efforts to payoff) and off page (to bring in traffic and reputation using a great on page structure).

And that place both of the on the equal chair, although on-page is slightly crucial (more important) for a website for the following reasons.
  1. It forms the basic (Foundation) of all your efforts
  2. It is both the starting and end point in most marketing strategies as your website is the center place
  3. Plays a crucial role in Brand & Reputation building

But yet one cannot function effectively without the other, atleast not so effective as they do together.

Both are almost equally important. You should first do on page and when that satisfying, you should get to off page SEO.

On-Page SEO-
This refers to factors that have an effect on your Web site or Web page listing in natural search results in popular search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing etc.. These factors are controlled by you or by coding on your page. Examples of on-page optimization include actual HTML code, meta tags, keyword placement and keyword density.
Off-Page SEO-
This refers that can be used to improve the position of a web site in the search engine results page (SERPs). Many people associate off-page SEO with link building . In general, off Page SEO has to do with promotion methods beyond website design for the purpose of ranking a website higher in the search results in popular search engines like Google, Yahoo etc.
According to my point of view On-Page optimization is the best solution to increase traffic and page rank.
