Cool Most profitable type of site?

Hi guys,
I was wondering if you had any thoughts or opinions as to what type of site has the potential to be the most profitable. So a freebie site would have to be my #1 choice.

Many have ask this and I'll say the same thing again.

Porn and MP3

If you really want to make a bunch of profit, then you'll have to enter the dark side.

I disagree.. i'm sure you can make alot of money with porn, but i can't see how mp3 sites can be that profitable. Yeah, you get alot of traffic.. if you know how to promote it, but there are so many programs out there that have nothing to do with mp3s that I can't see how it could be that profitable. I've never seen any lead or sale offers for mp3s.. and I haven't ever seen any paying mp3 banners. I'm not talking traffic, i'm talking profit.

My experience in terms of Earnings per visitor

BEST:

Sell your own stuff that can be sent over the internet (e.g. downloads, memberships, etc.)

Sell somebody else's stuff

Hope somebody clicks on a banner

Webmaster referral

WORST

I have no real experience of CPM or selling "hard" goods. So I'm not sure where that fits in.

Profits will depend on traffic + EPV

I would imagine that a "Free Stuff" site would attract a poor demographic. A free "hook" like 30 days free trial, is a different matter.

Well, atleast Mp3 will get more traffics which in turn get more clicks and generate more reveanue than most categories.

Sure it's not much as porn but you don't have to spend much on making MP3s, since most sites steal each others mp3.

Another thing, if you get 100,000 hits at just $2 CPM, you'll make $200 a day.

Talking

just my opinions

hmm, i think the most profitable type of site would be an ad network that makes big promises, like $5 guaranteed cpm, then doesn't pay and keeps all the ad revenue generated by its unknowing affiliates. then on top of that the ad network finds a buyer for the poorly managed ad network and runs away to afghanistan laughing at the buyer, affiliates, and law enforcement with bunches of cash. http://www.very-cool-stuff.com/ubb/wink.gif

KHN - I like the comment about "the dark side". If I only had no conscience I'd be making a lot of money in porn these days...

As for the original question, I think too many people are just trying to do "what will make a lot of money". The better approach will be to do something that you can do really well (what interests you)...that's how to make a good site that draws traffic...

Here is another idea, remember that joecartoon.com guy that makes $100,000 a month?? If you're good at designing flash then you should go with making violent cartoons. Face it, all people have a dark side to them whether it's violent or porn. http://www.very-cool-stuff.com/ubb/smile.gif

KHN you're right about that, when people see an accident or devastation (ie mostly what's on the news)people will watch but when an old man happens to faint in an airport I swear absolutely nobody bothered to look let alone help the guy which is scary what most of what society is today.

Thank you gbrott, for bringing the voice of reason to this thread...

This is ABSOLUTELY the answer ...

ivillage made $204 million on 65 million hits, thats about $4 million per one million hits. Now if I remember the cartoon site was making about only $100,000 on 15 million hits, correct me if im wrong , I also remember a post here a couple of days ago where a guy was getting $30 cpm for what was a very targetted site, i think something about lawns, i think that works out at $30,000 per million hits, i got one site in Australia where i sell the ads myself, i get au $120 cpm , but thats australia, the rates here are high because right now there is not enough quality websites for advettisrs but that should change by next year, anyway in my opinion a very narrow targeted advertisng like that lawn site , and where you can get on the road and sell yourself, thats why ivillage does well because they have their own reps on the road. I think!

Good points goose!

As I look at the original question, the comment is "the potential to be the most profitable."

I think people too often equate hits to $, there is not always a direct ratio here. I think your post really illustrates that.

The sites that are the most profitable are very often those which cater to a specific niche, and this does not always relate to highest traffic.

FYI - iVillage had revenues of $25 million for the first 9 months of 99, and losses of $63 million over that same period.

Great model - build a site and get $25 million in ads sold - and spend $88 million doing it.

Cool

Build a site around your passion, and you'll be a success, no matter how much you earn.

The most successful sites--in the long run--are those with a sustainable model, real content and a real community.

Help people and they'll help you. blah blah blah .. http://www.very-cool-stuff.com/ubb/smile.gif

Cheers,
Dan
