One of my main sites, Net-Ads has been hosted with ICOM since 1998. During that time I've seen my share of downtime, but this week has been a record-breaker, with the site down almost solidly for the past 48 hours (without notice, and with no responses to calls/emails seeking support).
Of course, this time I've made the decision to move, and established an account elsewhere (OLM) a few hours ago. My question is, is there any way to overcome downtime remotely in cases when a host experiences an extended outtage? For example, are there any third-party namservers that are highly reliable, and which hosts support as secondary servers that can be configured to direct users to a mirror when the primary site is down? And, if these are used, is there any propagation delay associated with this? Feel free to speak to me as though I'm an idiot if the answer is obvious. Hosting's not exactly my forte. http://geekvillage.com/ubb/wink.gif (Side note: if anyone has tried to email me during the past few days, there's a good chance that it hasn't yet reached my inbox due to this reason, so please be patient.) ------------------ Czar

Well downtime cannot be avoided, but sometimes it goes over the limit, backup connections is another way to ensure the least downtime.

Most Downtime can be avoided by doing 2 things,
1. Don't overload the servers 2. Have a knowledgeable admin. If you keep the servers at around 1.5 load or under, 97% of the time the server will never need a reboot or go down. ------------------ http://www.ddservers.com Prices start at $249 for dedicated servers. Not at present. During the downtime, I was too rushed to search for a new dedicated, so I moved to a shared plan at OLM. I am, however, currently considering the jump to a dedicated RAQ, so any answers that you provide will be a valuable education.
Thanks in advance, |

Hi,
Zonedit.com has "Failover & Load Balancing -monitoring, failover and load balancing services for web servers". It redirects your visitors to server B if server A is down. |

Well, I reboot my server every 3 days, even if it is still in green... I do'nt like to see my server load at above .5 and if i do, there goes a reboot...
The company I have my dedicated with is annoying at times like that as well... Sometimes they will do network upgrades (monthly) which knock my server for around 12 hours straight. They don't even send out emails, which is quite annoying. However I am happy because they always have very good customer support, by replying to emails wthin 2 hours tops, and even though I ask a lot of questions they are very nice... Not to mention my server is only 99/ month with 256 mb ram, cobalt raq 3i, 10 gig hd, and 150 gig bandwidth! (I worked out a deal with them), so I like my host http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif ------------------ - AI Corp. www.animeinstinct.com www.animetopsites.com www.dbzhost.com |

Thanks RK. That's exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.
Actually, looking at the simlicity of this approach, I'm sure that most dedicated hosts could manage this sort of system in-house, but in those cases where they don't, Zonedit seems to offer a viable solution. Thanks again. http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif ------------------ Czar

Outlaw, every 3 days? LOL, what OS do you use? WinLinux?
hehe. 3 months up and going strong for me and my freebsd 4.3 server. Czar, get a good host. I recommend www.planetz.net. Don't make anyone mad. Get a dedicated server or a colocation. ------------------ NeonTeen Internet -- The online hangout for teens. Email: kerplunk@neonteen.com Website: http://www.neonteen.com |
