Default Rotating Banners, and acceptable content of these

If you join a sponsor which rotates banners on your site (like tekno or ValueClick), OR if you join a banner exchange...you have no real control over what banners are shown on your site.

CT told me they saw a "bikini" banner exchange banner on my site. I think this was from free-banners on smart-clicks.

I have also noticed Smartclicks BE sometimes shows a casino ad. Even if you select family safe. Incidentally I have written to SmartClicks about this.

And finally we all know that atleast one very popular sponsor has sometimes had casino banners in their rotation.

So the questions are :-

1. 3 decent banner exchanges which don't have these kinds of content. Ideas ?
-- Exchange-It seems very "family safe" and very cool.
-- Link-Buddies ??? Anybody tried them ???
- I would consider LinkExchange, but (a) I can't figure out how to add a new a/c on their new interface [somebody tell me where they've hidden the button], and (b) I am concerned about whether they review sites properly

2. How do we deal with this problem ?
Personally I don't want to promote casinos, bikinis etc. I have no moral objection - these things have there place - but I just want to avoid them on my commercial sites.

3. On a more specific point - does anybody know if AdWave has any of these "themes" (or more specifically casinos) in their rotation. I am approved to run their banners on WildComputer, but don't want to run them if there are any casinos.

WC,
"Burst" does well for Webmaster sites and you can hand pick your advertisers.

Hi tteenie, thanks for the testing - please send more comments whenever you think of them, it really helps me! Did you get my robot announcement e-mail by the way?

I've never been a big fan of CPM, but might consider it for the new site. I always found I did better picking my own ads, than I might expect to from CPM. I have actually turned down every (a lot of) CPM offers I've had for WildComputer.

On the new site, it is too new to have enough stats to see if I should pick CPM or pick my own ads, and I don't have enough page views for burst (yet) anyways. I'm also gonna run a lot of Banner Exchange ads initially to grow the site faster. I'm still coding the banner rotation and targetting software, so expect some improvements here. The version running at present to rotate ads, is really the simplest personal targetted ads I could do, and is not very good (yet).

I am looking forward to getting a reply from Smartclicks on why they consider casinos "family safe". It bugs me a lot, as this ad seems to come up quite a lot. I may drop them and free banners too, if I can find better alternatives.

What do you think about my other questions in this thread ?

Has anybody else had this kind of "problem", or have comments on this.

Regarding objectionable banners ...

This will always be unavoidable to a certain degree, even with most respected banner exchanges, since they have no real way to know what kind of banners users are uploading.

The only way they'd know is if they manually approve each banner. I know that LinkBuddies used to do this, I don't know if they still do. (They've "upgraded" a lot in the past few months, and I haven't been using them.)

If you're looking for a good banner exchange, and are willing to put the banner at the top of your site, I'd suggest HitExchange (www.hitexchange.net). They are very professional, have a lot of restrictions and such to avoid cheating. For bottom of site banners, I seem to have great success with PowerExchange (www.plemx.com) ... not the most professional looking site, but I seem to get great CTRs (around 2% with all of my banners where on LinkBuddies they were getting around 0.5% ... I've verified this is true using HitBox.)

Anyways, that's my opinion. Oh, and regarding Burst, I use them on one of my sites, dosgames.com. They're excellent! They offer lots of CPM and CPC campaigns, and will let you choose which ads you want to run. When there are none of their campaigns available, you can use your own banner rotator to serve your own ads (or use ValueClick or another ad service).

I have used linkbuddies in the past, and am still using them on 2 sites of mine, they have a family safe index, and personally review every banner and site to try to keep it as family safe as possible. If your click-thru rate is high enough, they give you a 1:1 Ratio, but if it's too low, it drops down to 1:5.

Darren

Are you connected with PowerExchange (it doesn't really affect whether I'm likely to join or not, but if you are you should say so) ? Your site's banner seems to always be half way down their front page...

They look reasonable but it worries me their front page counter only shows 76000 visits.

I'm not try to catch you out, just want to know.

----

HitExchange looks reasonable, I need to read all their rules again.

Incidentally I really like Exchange-it, If you're not a member you should check em out.

Is this just me being dumb, but I can't find the 'add a site' button in link exchange. I log in, see 2 sites under this account in the combo, but can't find the place to add a third site.

I may rotate between various exchanges (assuming each one's rules allow this), and see which performs best.

I noticed that you used free-banners on your page, I don't believe that they are a very family safe banner exchange, I have used them before and seen a few controversial banners / sites on their exchange. Also sometimes when I click on a link from their bx it brings me to their site when it is not evern their banner, has anyone else had that problem before?

I've used HitExchange for one of my sites while it was growing ( http://www.weeno.com ) and then switched to Burst. HitExchange is good, but you definately need to read the rules. While it may seem like a pain, in the end, it means your banners get better exposure elsewhere.

Plus - you get free "credits" if you find/report cheaters.

Hi Wc,
You're welcome, glad to please! Yes I did get your email today, thanks and will let you know if I spot anything else...I am also waiting to find out how "family safe" tekno adwave banners are before I decide to use them.

I haven't noticed this bug as I haven't clicked on any free-banners banners - but I did read their HTML code.

I think they have a bug in their HTML, which means depending on browser settings, on the 2nd and (onwards) page you view on a site containing a FB banner, the code rotates to point at the next site, but the image might still be cached.

I am not sure, but suspect this may also cause undercounting too. I'm gonna remove them either completely, or very nearly completely from my new site

I just checked one of my mail boxes, and I'd missed this reply from SmartClicks. Thought I'd share it (they have 4 categories : Family Friendly, Commercial, PG & Mature).

My original message is first, with personal info and urls removed

===============================
Hi I just added this account to SmartClicks, and
have now added your code to this site. My site
is commercial so I have ticked commercial, and
picked to accept commercial banners.
I was not very happy as I see casino banners on
my site. I was wondering should I change the
setting on this account to "Family Friendly" ??
My site is commercial but I do not want this kind
of controversial content on this site. I have
changed this site to show family friendly but am
not sure if that's the right way to deal withthis issue.

Hello ******
There was a database problem going on that had casino-type banners showing up on
PG and CM sites. We do categorize casino banners in Mature. We hope to have
this problem fixed in the near future so you may want to switch back from FF to
CM ratings.Sincerely,SmartAge Customer Service
