Getting no follow links is considered as insignificant from the point of view of SEO yet I have a doubt whether they are really insignificant or not?

It depends on where those links are. There is still value in being part of a community and interacting with that community. Either from getting traffic from people clicking on the links or getting some recognition in the community as an active member who owns a site that serves that community.

Google is strict towards no follow and do follow except that other search engines giving importance to these kind of links. Yahoo counts these links as backlinks. You can check in Yahoo explorer and various links which have no follow tags are showing in that list.
So if you are getting links on your niche that take it, irrelevant to no follow or do follow. |

No Follow links can be powerful even for the rankings but the fact is that they have been invented to prevent the links PR juice to flow. Many people think that No Follow links are useless while in reality the case is not like this.

A no follow link is still useful in that if your page isn't yet indexed by the search engines if you get a no follow link from another site, the search engines will follow the link and take a look and hopefully index your new page.

No follow links are worthwhile because they help show Google that you're site is blossoming organically. A site with 5,000 do-follow links and zero no-follow links is bound to set off a red flag in Google's eyes. A healthy site should have lots of BOTH. A spam site will have lots of low-quality, do-follow links.

My answer would be a straight no there. To search engine BOT's, they may be worthless and are not SEO friendly, but when it comes to real readers, I guess it will be of great help. As long as the link redirects to your site that its.
By the way, you might wanna check some SEO misconceptions in this link. These are some usefull stuffs which you can use some day. Here it is: http://www.squidoo.com/seomisconceptions |

They are not worthless because:
1. they can bring traffic to your site 2. Other search engine is not following this attribute |

Yep not worthless as Yahoo and MSN don't really downgrade these as much as Google. Also either way you are getting clicks to your website which is what you want. For SEO they are not good but for just traffic they are good either way.

yes, no follow links are worthless in some respects. they wont lift you in the SERPs. However, what they will do is make your linking look much more natural and in this way its a big benefit.

Nofollow links are mainly for getting traffic to your website. They won't help in Google SERP as other people said.
