Default When Web 2.0 becomes World 2.0

While many in the Web 2.0 space are now struggling in the wake of financial pressures and a tighter availability of startup capital, the better funded players are driving forward in leaps and bounds.

News Corp-owned MySpace, for example, recently set out to tackle iTunes by striking up music distribution deals with the biggest labels in the world. Since then, the company has announced even bigger plans, that would see the Web 2.0 player step into the 'real world' by extending its social platform into the development of communication devices; specifically music players.

That's right. While dates and details are still uncertain, MySpace has hinted that it will develop a portable media player to compete against the iPod and that it will leverage social data and features such as the ability to share playlists with friends as its competitive advantage.

What do you think about this development? Do they stand a chance?

to be honest, i will never buy a gadget that can only play music. even if you introduced a social networking element into it, it still basically is a music player. with the proliferation of ipads, iphones and other multi-functional mobile devices that can play not only music but also browse, play games, write, play videos, etc. ipod btw was predicted to be obsolete in a few years from now. i just don't know why myspace is still thinking to venture into this dying area.

Hi Arisha and welcome to Geek/Talk.

It looks as though you hit the nail on the head. This thread was actually started way back in 2008, while MySpace were still kings of the world and the iPhone was just a glimmer on the horizon. Much has happened since then and a MySpace-branded music player would be wasteful in today's device landscape.

Yeah MySpace is washed up. I personally don't really see much room for innovation in their industry right now. Making a music player has been done long ago. If they are going to innovate they will need to be much bolder.

MySpace have this huge user base of musicians and artists. Perhaps they should turn it into a Band Management Platform.
