Tim O'Reilly, founder of O'Reilly Media, which publishes a whole range of web development books hat are a favourite at universities around the world, has spoken passionately about the need for Web 2.0 application developers to stop wasting their time building lightweight Facebook apps and to instead use their vast arrays of talent to tackle some of the world's biggest problems.
The man who coined the term "Web 2.0" has identified that many developers in the space are spending their time building novelty apps, or copying other people's ideas. He sees this as a symptom of greed, whereby developers are setting up companies in an effort to grab some quick venture capital funding, without really setting out to produce something meaningful. Tim has identified that the amount of talent operating in the Web 2.0 space is substantial and that they could help to alleviate major global problems if they all started contributing true value to the development of a free, open and productive web. More of his comments may be read here: http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news...le.php/3772591 Is this true? Have we all been wasting our time building novel, low-value applications? Will you start to consider how your resources could be put to use in generating real value that meets the needs of the current global market?

He says it's not just the right thing to do, but also the smart thing to do -- especially as the credit crunch spreads to Silicon Valley, venture financing becomes scarce and start-ups have to retrench.
