Alexa ranks are virtually meaningless. I have a new site that has been under development for 4 months with an Alexa rank of 68,000. I dont use the alexa toolbar either. My daily webtraffic is under 10 uniques daily.
I met a alexa techy at adtech last year and he did give me insite on alexa. It made me believe it's even less accurate than I thought. Basically if you want a high alexa, fresh content daily is huge. And have links to all the new content on the main page of your site. I'm not talking 1-2 new things, but 30-50 new articles daily if you want to be in the top 25,000 sites. Of course if you are posting this much fresh content daily, most likely you have the traffic to back it up.

Everytime I try to go to alexa.com it doesnt even work. Am i missing something?

in the past 9 - 12 months one of my older sites has gone from an alexa ranking of about 22,000 to 266,000 and all that time my traffic has grown somewhat

my traffic is coming in a slightly different manner for this site than it one time did ... well, i don't mind saying, before the drop it came mostly from ppc searchs at G ... now most of it comes from G publishers

I notice that ranking.com also ranks this site with less traffic than before too, so maybe different traffic sources figure in

just checked mine -- don't even show up on traffic ranking - i get 65,000 page views and 40,000 visitors per month - when we first check 3 years ago we where ranked 35,000 -- go figure -
