For me article marketing is about creating relationships. You submit your articles to article directories, then setup a Google alert for a unique phrase in your article, find out which webmasters have posted your article on their website, you contact them and offer to update the article to make it unique, this alone increases the power of the link back to your website plus you make a contact that you can offer new articles to in the future.

Articles submissions do have plenty of advantages. Article directories tend to review the article fast and you can generate traffic and spread the word about your site.

I think article directories still count. As you can check in Yahoo explorer that they do count for backlinks from article directories
