Default Ad network errors..

I'm getting these strange errors in my apache log. it seems these errors come after someone has accessed a page, so I assume it's some advertiser's ad code that messed up.

I'm running Fastclick, casale, tribal, adsense, budinc..

Does anyone else have this problem. have you narrowed it down?

I've been trying to track these errors down myself, but haven't had much luck. It is definitely something to do with the ad codes, but since they are rotating all the time, it's almost impossible to catch where it's coming from. There's also no "referer" URL in the Apache log files for any of these. Weird.

I think this has something to do with a pop-up blocker buster inplentation by one of the ad networks. The old buster program used to show a /1 for directory that launched the forced pop.

It's a call by fastclick's popup mechanism when it encounters a blocker. Tribal Fusion's "banner/pop" combo does something similar.

Is it a bug? Or are they doing it on purpose, so that the publisher will know who is using a popup blocker? Why use an invalid URL which can't even be modified by Apache's mod_rewrite rules??

It is used for two purposes. As a bypass method and to notify users of their traffic with blockers. Most large providers are using this method.

The 400 is used because some publishers redirect 404s to their homepage or an error page. Given this, a 404 can potentially cause more load on a server.

I have been seeing this error only for a few weeks now, but I would presume Fastclick has been using it for longer.

There was only one day, last Monday, and only on one of my sites that there were lots of these errors, which made me take notice and ask questions of my admins.
