Perhaps the oldest form of marketing, face-to-face networking remains an effective tool for building relationships, trust and understanding with businesses that operate within a particular industry or region.
Most towns these days house chambers of commerce or similar, formal networking groups who gather for breakfast or wine while listening to inspirational speakers and discussing business. Even in our industry, which is newer and more globally-focused than most, a number of industry associations and informal groups meet at trade shows and other networking functions to establish and grow alliances with complementary organisations and publications. I'm just wondering how many of our geeks have explored these opportunities and, if so, how beneficial they have found such relationship building exercises to be. Have you attended any industry trade shows, local networking meetings or business breakfasts lately?

Yes I agree that face-to-face networking stills remains an effective tool for building relationships & trust, You can be enable to interact with your customers closely, where your customers can be involve too in your project, you can be able to understand the difficulties usually they face and their objectives, which can be most important for further development and improvement of your products or service if required. I’ve practical experience of organizing such trade show which had an overwhelming response and it was a most successful event.
I think by implementing the trade show networking, one can reach to their targeted customers more close as overall it enable us to offer knowledge based educational support to those offline customers in more significant way. |

What's good with face-to-face networking is that you can observe the gestures of the person therefore you can assess the sincerity and trustworthiness. But networking online is proven effective as well due to the fact that we don't own all our time to extend connection with people other than in our place. It is quite risky to trust but we also have to look at the fact that internet is dominating now thus majority of transactions involve online connections.

Good insight, MarcyOne.
This thread was started in 2005, when online social networking was in its very early stages and rarely used by businesses, but a heck of a lot has changed during the past four years. It's now almost impossible to grow a business effectively without paying at least some attention to the online social networks, since they now attract such huge audiences of engaged consumers and business owners. I still place a lot of value on real-world networking and regularly attend two large networking groups here on the Gold Coast, but Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook have become just as important to my business lately as any real-world networking group.
