My local computer store is selling PCs with P4s and RAMBUS, but it seems that the fastest dedicated servers that ISPs will lease you have a 133 MHz FSB.

I don't know of any either. Rambus is a mixed bag performance wise and very expensive to boot (although less so lately).
Rambus memory has poor latency but high bandwidth. This probably implies good single user performance (relatively few processes) but poor multi-user performance (many simultaneous processes with wdiely differeing memory access patterns). Even Intel says Rambus is not for the sever market - although that is probably due to cost and memory density issues as well. If you really need memory bandwidth in an Intel box, then consider motherboards based on the serverworks chipsets. I believe the high end chip set supports a quadruple memory pipeline (4 full accesses at once)using registered ECC SDRAM - although this is far in excess even what 2 good old P3s can use effectively. Also note, that you best use SCSI drives with serverworks chipsets as thier IDE interface is only DMA/33. |
