Unhappy Site Review of AplusJokes.com .....

Hi all,

Could you do a site review of my new web site www.AplusJokes.com
This is my first site towards building a dynamic site using PHP and MYSQL.

The issues I already know are.
1. I need to add an image at the top.
2. Mailing List is not working. I never installed the script. I am planing to use Subscribe Me.
3. Disclaimer and Privacy policy links are not yet coded.

Please review and give me your comments

Thanks

Lavee

Something must not be working???

I just pulled up http://www.AplusJokes.com/ in Netscape Communicator 4.75 and I am basically getting a blank page.

Using IE 5 I am getting the message "The page cannot be displayed"

Hi Lavee,

Nice start.

I see the home page along with an error that reads:

Warning: 0 is not a MySQL result index in /www/aplusjokes/main.php on line 10

The cell on the far left needs some padding.

If I surf to : http://www.aplusjokes.com/myjokes.php?cid=3 how do I return to your home page aka the top of the directory?

You need links at the top and bottom of every page that lets a visitor return to the top level. Plan on sub cats as well as your site grows. Something like:

Home > Lawyer Jokes > Page 2

HTH and best of luck http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

Questy,

My mistake, I overlooked some closing the tables and Netscape is very harsh.

Can you look it up again.

Steve,

I was doing some code tweaking in SQL and probably that is why you saw that message.

It is all set now.

Since, I don't have any thing interesting set up in the front page, I have not given the home page link now.
The home page dipalys the latest 5 jokes added to the data base.
I need to look into the Home > Lawyer Jokes > Page 2 sort of stuff when I have more time.

Any other comments.

Thanks

Hi Lavee,

Ah yes, I can see clearly now!

Sometime you are calling for for "Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" which is good, sometimes you are not calling for any font but allowing the browser to default, which is bad. Call your own shots, "Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" is a good choice, so choose it everywhere.

I'd add a few pixels of cell padding so the main body text has some white space against the brown side bar.

Your intro paragraph, I'd make it a little bolder as far as font, as well as clean up a few words to make it a little bolder in verbal style as well.

See if you can pick up on what I change.

Before...

Welcome to A + Jokes - Your online resource for funny and Hilarious jokes. You can see the 5 latest jokes added here. You may browse the menu in the left for category based jokes. We also have funny pictures and Illusion Pictures. There is a Comic strip section where you can find many cartoons which gets updated on a daily basis and weekly basis.

After...

>> Most of my changes, were to do away with unneeded capital letters, edit it down just a hair, and to start sentences with verbs rather than pronouns. (Something they teach you in writing ads.)

"Making The most of the Oppurtunity" << Might want to run a spell check on your site, I think it's "Opportunity"

I think you are on the right track, the look and feel of the sight seems to work well, as do the scripts. Just need to pay a little attention to some of the details.

Hope this helps.

Do overlook the importance of a good index / front door / main gateway page.

Questy,

Thanks for the review. I did most of your recommended changes. I have not done the cell padding part. I am in the process of creating a good index page.
Let me know if you have any more comments.

Thanks

Lavee,

Nice progress http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

I didn't look at all your Cat Headlines but this one:

Bumper Stickers Jokes

Uses an "underline" but is not a link. Compunding this confusion for your visitor is the fact that it's blue text. Headlines should never be underlined unless they are a link.

I suggest that you build the UI for your directory structure in the beginning. Assume the site will go 3 or 4 levels deep and stick this stuff in from the start. It will save you time later. Even if you have to make a dummy entry in a sub cat like "Coming Soon"

Home > Lawyer Jokes > Page 1 > Page 2 > Page 3

Shorter pages combined with multiple pages for a sub cat will produce more page views/impressions for you. As opposed to having a super long single Lawyer Jokes page.

BTW, where did you get that script?

Good luck.

Steve,

First of all, thanks for your time to review my web site.

I changed the headline to a different color and removed my underline there.

I only display 5 jokes per page. If I have more than five jokes in that category, it will automatically display a link for the next set of jokes. You can see this in action in Animal Jokes category.

So, If I have 200 jokes, and if a user wants to read 200 jokes, that will create 40 page views for me.
And only the latest jokes will be displayed in the first page of the category. So a regular user can read upto that joke and then skip to next category.

I am also going to add a search function where you can search by top ratings, new jokes in last 7 days and more.

I wrote this entire script from scratch.

This whole process took me about a month (may be less) to write.

I have a back end system, where I have to approve a joke or picture before it is visible online.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Any other comments, Any one

Thanks

Lavee
