A few months ago I started a subscription module through Paypal. Subscribers receive my site's content ad-free daily (Mon-Fri) and I receive $3 every 3 months. I only have 13 subscribers as yet (but that covers hosting). As insentive, I offer a few little bonuses (a quarterly contest, a title and icon for board members). It's no windfall - but it's growing (and I haven't heavily promoted it). My suggestion would be to offer some kind of benefit of being a site member, subscriber or supporter. However small, people who appreciate your site will be glad to help.
