Default websponsors e-mail

Just recieved an e-mail from websponsors with some new news.

1) They will now be paying out n/30, always happy news for a publisher

2) As of July 31st, They are cancelling 80 campaigns due to poor performancein order to concentrate on the more profitable programs .

This is a significant portion of their clients, and I guess you can put a spin on this either way. Good to get rid of the dead wood, but brings into question (a) their ability to survive as they are today, and (b) the ability of their sales force to recognize bad programs when they see them.

80 cuts all at one time seems a bit drastic, and may indicate deeper problems.

here is the list of cancellations as of July 31st

I have to say that Websponsors has always been an extremely reputable and dependable sponsors, and I applaud this move by them ... it must've taken a lot of guts. One of the problems with a lot of CPA programs now is that the conversion rates are terrible. I've tried a lot of Fineclicks, LeadCrunch, CJ, etc programs that generated no leads at all after 100s of clicks.

I have to say though that maybe they're being a bit overzealous in their cancellations, I actually used the SweepsClub program and while the conversion rate wasn't great, it wasn't horrible ... I guess they only make $$$ if CPA offers convert, so it makes sense economically for them to get rid of offers that aren't converting. Since they serve the ads themselves they'd be losing money on bandwidth, after showing 1000's of ads with no conversions .....

You would think that these CPA companies would have people whose job it is to check landing pages, etc, since they only get paid for conversions, and give the merchants ideas to improve conversions, etc, since we've all sent merchants hundreds of clicks with no conversions. And like you said, it would have to help on the bandwidth deal to drop non-converting programs.
There was a post on abestweb about this affiliate checking this merchant in CJ who had not been converting for them, the merchant had put up out of stock pages for lots of their products, and instead of back ordering or whatever most companies do, they had a link to amazon with their afiliate code that said sorry were out, try Amazon, or something to that effect.
I didn't read the entire thread, but they said CJ said it was fine because they were paying CJ for the traffic. Excuse me, but I thought they just paid for leads or sales, are affiliates just the easiest people to dupe, so we get fleeced most often?

Well it makes sense in a way; an unscrupulous site that wants traffic could create a CPA where the surfer had to sign up for their newsletter ...... and then bury the newsletter link at the bottom of the landing page, where 99% of the users wouldn't find it. They'd be getting lots of traffic, plus a subscription to their newsletter once in awhile too. If they paid $0.20/lead, and only 1% of visitors signed up, the site is essentially buying traffic $0.002 per unique visitor. Not bad It's the same reason site will create really high CTR banners, and buy lowball CPM advertising, they're trying to minimize their $ paid per hit.

The better networks do carry out this type of research, and some (AffiliateFuel, for example) go so far as to openly disclose their findings with their affiliates.

Network conversion comparison features, such as EPC figures - though flawed in some respects - also help publishers to weed out the laggards. FineClicks, DirectLeads, CJ, AffiliateFuel, Websponsors and a few others offer access to these stats either within their publisher interfaces, or the email newsletters that are distributed to their affiliate ranks.

Of course, dramatic action such as Websponsors' culling of the ranks never hurts. I get the feeling, though, that the list also includes some merchants who had independently decided to leave, or whose campaigns had concluded, since a few of those campaigns (American Baby, Dido/Britney CDs, Sci-Fi book club) were converting very well for me.

BTW, can those of you who use the firm regularly tell me which was the last month for which you received payment? Since they removed their news page, I've been a little confused as to where they're up to.

My last payment was for April.

I expect the May payment should arrive very soon.

From their last policy email:

" Webclients.net is pleased to announce that we will pay all Affiliate Publishers on a Net 30 basis, beginning on August 31, 2002.
.......

7. Payment of NET 30 on all campaigns. Please note that you will receive a double payment on August 31 - for the months of June and July 2002 "
