Question Ringtone sites are they illegal?

I always wanted to make a ringtone website, basically just like a lyrics site. But I don't want to break any law!

If you refer to a site mhere people can download a new ring for the cellphone then I don't see why they will be ilegal.
As long as you make the ring's yourself.

All big ringtones-websites want money for every ringtone.

If you don't want to sell RT, you can easy make such site, and don't worry about breaking the law.

Say this article is a joke, please do.
Or I will make it my personal vendata to make sure more and more things get to "napster" like networks. (Sony have some stupid new copy protection thing I maneged to get over )

The greed of the music and film companies have reached levels of unimaginble scale. At times where manufacturing a CD is less then 50c and DVD less then 1$ there is no reason what so ever to charge over 10$ for one.
If they had sold then at resnoble prices every one will buy them, but off course when I can buy a blank CDR for 60c and download some ****ty quality Mp3 from Kazza most teen age kids will not spend the money in most cases.

Bhaaa,
In most cases they will not tell the diferance betwin a high quality audio to a MC (Mini Cassete) that was washed to shore after spanding 3 years under the wavs.

I don't know about Australia, but here in Sweden you have to pay 10% of the price (minimum SEK 1 (~USD 0.1)) to STIM, the equivalent of American RIAA, for every time a ringtone is downloaded from your site. Record companies can also make exceptions for some artists and bands, making it illegal to offer their music as ringtones. There's also a restriction that says that ringtones can't be longer than 30 seconds.

Why not create your own ringtones? If you have friends majoring in music ask them to create some unique ringtones or short musics. (at least that's how some companies are doing in Korea) This way, you can actually own the intellectual property and standout from the crowd. Or, make the site so users can upload ringtones to your site.

Creating new ringtones is a good idea, but it will be non popular.
In fact, most popular ringtones taken from popular music.

And another problem - you must be real professional composer to make new, quality ringtones.

Take a bucket of water and pour it on some poor Syntisizer.
that will give you exactly the same sounds as most ring tons.

Just want to give this a UK angle.

The Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS) has a special license available for people who want to produce ring tones based on published music.

Ring Tone sites and service providers are supposed to pay royalties tot eh MCPS who then collect and foward the money to the artists.

I have a site that does provide the "keypresses" for free so you can plug them directly into Nokia or Ericsson phones. I'm probably breaking the law somewhere.

However I have used a site at www.cbfmobile.com that provides free sending of ring tones and graphics to mobile phones in the UK & US. I don't know how they are able to do this (other than through online ad money).

PS. Sorry to post the link to cbfmobile. I am not affiliated with this site in anyway.
