My turn http://geekvillage.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I'm toying with the following idea so please consider this "market research." Many members and webmasters have domains with very long and hard to remeber URLs like: www.freesites.com/members/hobbies/joe/ Would they/you be interested in a Free Redirect Service using "vanity" domains. I'm only talking about a DNS wild card service so the new URL in the above example for joe would be: www.joe.geeksrock.com or www.sally.coolbabe.com The other way to do this kind of thing doesn't seem as appealing to me as it basically uses a 404 error page with a call to a script and .htaccess to redirect as in: www.geeksrock/~joe I would be gratefull for your input. ------------------ Best Regards, Steve_S Your Administrator Free Guest Book ~ Free Tell A Friend www.very-cool-stuff.com Tons of High Quality Free Stuff www.coolgroup.com Multi-Media Postcards & Community www.cool-seek.com Find what you want |

Check out NorthSky.com. They will allow you to build a community using your domain.
For example, if your domain is IsHere.Com, you can offer a guy named "Joe" 20 megabytes of web space with the address "Joe.IsHere.Com" and an unlimted number of e-mail addresses like "blank@Joe.IsHere.com". They're the people behind freeservers.com and they were bought by About.com for a paltry $22 million dollars last November. |

Anyone know what NorthSky charges for their basic setup??? I have some really good domains setup for this very same reason. Just haven't got time to setup the site yet.

It'd be cool if you included an e-mail account too. The vanity redirection part sounds good, since the net is all but polluted with the action redirects (like go.to, hop.to, etc.)

NorthSky is free. They make money from a banner ad on each page.

"North Sky provides transparent solutions for offering FREE web sites, web based email, and instant messaging to your online membership. Whether you choose one of our turnkey solutions, or need a more customized solution, we can help."
I suppose the more customized solutions might have fees involved. |

well I contacted Northsky last year and they have 3 plans
The cobranded was $200 fee but now it's free the premier where they are transparent is US$10,000 setup last year and think if i remember correctly there's an annual fee as well. The third is what Freeservers uses which i don't even want to guess how much it costs. I had planned to use Anime2001.com domain for the premier service last year that's why i contacted them... I still really want that premier service but at US$10,000 that's out of my range (it's a quite reasonable price for what you're getting) As to the original question Steve put forth, I am also planning to do a redirection service for anime sites uses the domain, anime2001.net and a few others ... didn't Ted have a thread about the redirection script he has at his site http://solutionscripts.com/warehouse...ct/index.shtml i also found this site but haven't looked at it in detail http://www.redirectionguide.net/ How to start your own redirection service: http://www.redirectionguide.net/articles/1.htm Redirect Pro http://www.go2cgi.com/redirectpro/ There's a few others as well... ------------------ Evangelion in the 21st century Eva2000.com Australian Star Wars Prequels ThePrequels.net Anime2001 Network Anime2001.com Coming soon TheDesktopThemes.com |

Interesting stuff and thanks. This is really custom coding if you want a robust Admin and a drop down for a user to select the top level domain from a list of say 5 or 10 domains.
I think 5 good names would be enough to open. ------------------ Best Regards, Steve_S Your Administrator Free Guest Book ~ Free Tell A Friend www.very-cool-stuff.com Tons of High Quality Free Stuff www.coolgroup.com Multi-Media Postcards & Community www.cool-seek.com Find what you want |

Steve,
I think you could certainly "go live with five" and just keep on adding as you go... I'll be people might also be interested in stuff like tracking, or any other service you can think of that will distinguish yours from the pack. I don't know this field at all, but if no-one has yet integrated a counter, you could. That would beat out the competition since I presume that people would have trouble tracking referrers if they all arrived through a redirect. Right? - Dr. Igloo ;-) |
