Default Unsolved mystery of dog haiku

On my Yuckles! web site I have some pages of dog haiku. You probably remember the email of dog haikus that circulated back in 1999. Well, people keep writing to me (including a couple of journalists) asking what the origin of the dog haiku collection is. I don't have an answer. No one seems to have an answer. It's a mystery. All anyone knows is that they suddenly appeared in everyone's email.

Do any of you have any insight/info on their origin?

Here are a few

I love my master;
Thus I perfume myself with
This long-rotten squirrel.

I lie belly-up
In the sunshine, happier than
You ever will be.

Today I sniffed
Many dog butts--I celebrate
By kissing your face.

I sound the alarm!
Mailman Fiend--come to kill us all!
Look! Look! Look! Look!

I sound the alarm!
Neighbor's cat--come to kill us all!
Look! Look! Look! Look!

My human is home!
I am so ecstatic I have
Made a puddle.

I hate my choke chain--
Look, world, they strangle me! Ack!
Ack! Ack! Ack! Ack!

Sleeping here, my chin
On your foot--no greater bliss--
well, Maybe catching cats

The cat is not all
Bad--she fills the little box
With Tootsie Rolls.

Dig under fence--why?
Because it's there. Because it's
There. Because it's there.

I am your best friend,
Now, always, and especially
When you are eating.

And for geeks, computer Haiku

Your laptop crashes
Now your house is still and dark
Outside the stars watch.

Who owns the data?
Magnetic trails on cold steel
This illusion spins.

Your hard disc has died
Look at this empty vessel now
It once held so much.

Keyboard error now
The universe holds on fast
Yin and Yang dancing. (Czar and qball0213?)

Hold fast to your mouse
This still small beast was your friend
His wire tail is quiet.

The breeze blew so cool
But now the fan won’t turn
Files die in the heat.

Which file was lost today?
The software could smell your fear
Take a long journey.

I loved some of those...but I guess you have to be in the mood (or tremendously sleep deprived) to really get in the mood for parody haiku.

Late to rest this night
Book-work, not dance, caused the pain
My brain turns to mush

Okay, so it's not profound, but after bashing out two BAS forms tonight (Aussies would know about these horrors), I'm not feeling particularly creative.

Thanks for trying guys. I guess the origin of the dog haiku will remain a mystery a bit longer.

For AztecSummer who thinks the dog haiku are icky...probably only a real "dog person" can appreciate these haiku. Dogs are wonderful creatures but they do have some funky habits. If you love dogs...you laugh at them. If you don't love them...you'll probably be happier with a cat.

I have received that in email many times and I don't have the 'dubious' talent to write that stuff. Maybe it was Czar, judging by his nocturnal creation

By the way Czar what is BAS?

And thanks for the congrats AS

I just did a search and that particular piece of doggy haiku can be found on dozens of websites. The earliest reference I could find in a Newsgroup is this post from March 1999. No way to tell whether "Lynmari" was the author. From what I can gather Lynmari was a regular poster to alt.support.arthritis newsgroup.

Okay, not all Aussies are aware of those three evil letters, but those whose businesses are registered to collect GST (I'm sure those three are more familiar) know them well.

BAS=Business Activity Statement; the tax form that must be filled out by business owners and sent to the Australian Tax Office - along with any payments due - every quarter.

Unfortunately, since I trade under two business names - both of which are registered to collect GST - I have to balance two sets of books every time the due date nears, which somehow always manages to force me into burning the midnight oil.

Czar's piece was nice and smooth, gentle -- the way I imagine Haiku to be. He is probably published, already, with a 20 year contract and lots of perks.
You figured me out. I have a lucrative contract to publish my random ramblings on Geek/Talk for as long as Steve maintains the desire to keep his servers crunching data, and the perks are receiving flattering comments from wonderful members such as yourself.

BTW, has anyone here moused-over the "crying" smiley when viewing the whole collection? Steve seems to have caught on to the feeling plaguing those of us who are ad-dependant.
