new name needed for "scumware" - geek/talk: Signature-free discourse for serious web publishers

While I agree 100% that programs like Gator are indeed "scum" in practice, I think that geekvillage as the higher moral ground should come up with a new name for this type of product.

Calling it scumware I think could turn some people off to our cause, and I think that a different title for it could go a long way to help us out.

Perhaps something similar to "Overlayed Adware" or something similar.

How about:

"PredatoryWare"

Here is the result of a look up at www.dictionary.com:

Predatory:

1. Living by preying on other organisms: a predatory mammal; a predatory insect.

2.
a. Of, relating to, or characterized by plundering, pillaging, or marauding.
b. Living by or given to exploiting or destroying others for one's own gain.

I thought "scabware" was appropriate (in the USA persons who defy a striking union are called "scabs")

While that may make sense (scabware) the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear that word is the blood clots that form when you cut yourself - yuck!

Squeamish connotation if you ask me.

I'm a fan of Theftware... easy on the syllables, and gets the point across nice and fast.

Theftware gets the point across beautifully, and comes across as a more rational point of view, less easily dismissed as extreme. On the other hand, we're not at the beginning of this fight, and "scumware" might be too branded by now to change the term.

In any case, they're still scum.
