Lightbulb Offering Free 30 Day Intro Ads?

I have a site that is regional in nature (Washington State). I've tried various ad networks and have made a little money but not much. The low return we all experience on most ads is due to the fact the ads have little in common with most site visitors. How many 100's of credit card or cell phone deals have we all seen? In order to generate local advertisers I've been thinking about offering a free 30 day banner ad. If I generate some business for them they might likely sign up for a paying ad. Has anyone tried anything like this to generate their own advertisers? I've had some luck signing up local advertisers through listing ad rates on my site. They generate far more than any ad networks. Plus they would probably be imune from ad blocking software.

Thanks
Jerry @ Washington Employment Web

I have tried direct sales for my rosacea site and I found that offering a free trial was the best way to get some interest. Without the free trial I didn't get any response. Be aware that when you start talking about paid advertising, most small businesses probably wont understand the CPM/CPC approach to advertising and are likely to be more comfortable with a fixed rate deal.

You will probably want to be running your own ad serving software so that you can provide statistics about views/clicks etc for those potential advertisers who may be interested in such things.
