I'm currently using gzip compression level 1 on my php pages. What are the pros and cons of moving up to a higher level?

You may want to check out this site [ http://leknor.com/code/gziped.php ] to get an idea of the change in filesize when you increase the compression level.

optimal level is 1 any higher has no benefit as you can see if you check out http://leknor.com/code/gziped.php
