Another way of promoting your site is to get big sites linking to you.

It has already happened to me several times and very recently from a big spanish site.
(I haven't asked anything)

This brings lots of traffic :-)

My tip is if you do quality then you will be linked.

Anybody else with same experience. ?

Yeah, sure 3 online newspapers/magazines did articles that mentionned or were about my page, it brought in loads of hits..I agree that if you have quality content, these pages will link to you..

My site was recently linked from a major record label after we wrote a story on one of its artists. And so far this week traffic has been on the upswing. One good thing about us that as a music magazine, we feature interviews and reviews that the bands ultimately post on their own sites.
