Cool Site Review and Suggestions please.

Thanks for checking this out :

I'm not sure where I want to go with this site. The basic Idea was to create an interactive site that would link to random fun or cool sites while still leaving my page up. I think I have accomplished this.
http://www.randomfun.com/index1.html

One of my questions is, should I have categories, like for instance the pokemon link on the left?? I know nothing about pokemon but I know a lot of people do searches on this.

I am thinking that categories are going to keep people at my site longer. I am considering putting a random banner script at the top and bottom the site, but I think I am going to wait on that until I start getting visitors.

I think I am going to design some sort of award (link back )maybe for sites to put up If they are selected for my site. Each site is personally reviewed by a live person.

Any suggestions on what else I can add to the site for my visitors?? Anything I can do to make this a more rewarding site for people to visit??

Also let me know how the java button works for you. We have put a lot of work into designing it. If you have trouble please post what browser and version you are using.

I am open to any and all comments, this site is still a work in progress, I can't decide if it has potential or not. But I welcome your comments.

Thanks,

Kid

Kid,

I'm fond of calling this "eye candy" and it's a dirty little secret that a lot of folks never get http://www.very-cool-stuff.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Promise not to tell anyone http://www.very-cool-stuff.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Some thoughts

1) From day one design this site with page views/impressions (Not hits) per unique as one of a number of important considerations. I'm not suggesting that you make your visitors click click click a zillon times but try and reach a happy compramise. As much as I love our resident "Dr. Primate" http://www.very-cool-stuff.com/ubb/biggrin.gif his download links are all on a single page. I made this very mistake myself so please don't think it's just you. Just my thoughts monkey. Each should be on it's own page with an index to start.

2) I don't care what technology you use. Just deliver a new "Hunk" and "Babe" every day. Mystery, intrigue, and fun stuff.

3) A "vote for your favorite Hunk or Babe" is another winner.

4) Don't be reluctant to experiment with a subject/image that isn't already a huge hit. For example, I just finished Cameron Diaz and in a day or two I will post it. I'm gambling that she is the next big mega page view generator as opposed to Britney who already is. If my guess is correct, I'm way way ahead of the wannabes. If I'm wrong, well thats just a reasonable business plan that didn't work out. Iv'e had my share of both http://www.very-cool-stuff.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Cool

Ok so now you gave me an idea, How about I still launch them into new windows, yet instead of just having that site in the window, I could put the site into a frame.. the site on the bottom, my banner on top along with a note to close the window and try another random url.... this gives my banners even more exposure, any thought on this?? I'll get a working prototype on this asap for you guys to check out.

Steve do you think I should have multiple categories?? Or just stick to one topic and really work on that?? If I have multiple categories I will definately have to get some help to keep the links up to date and add new ones etc.

That's it Steve, I've HAD it. http://www.very-cool-stuff.com/ubb/wink.gif Thank you for the comment though. My next site -- which will be more massive than I can possibly comprehend at this time -- will experiment with the idea of "maximising" impressions. MpMD was not created for pageviews. And Kid, you'll definitely have to do something to up the banner views, if that will be your source of revenue. Many sites these days open a new frameset with the banner (like you suggested) but as a twist you could also rotate banners automatically within that frame.

I had actually typed out that exact mailbits idea, but deleted it because I couldn't think of a way to make it work. You might want to write mailbits about your idea, because I can't see any reason why they wouldn't provide a service like that. Though I believe it would take some fancy JavaScript work. With Mailbits' current system you would have to devise a way to make the reffering page, the one they're looking at in the lower frame. Does anybody know if there's a way to change the reffering site? I have two massive JavaScript books, but never enough patience to learn it all. Wish I could give you an answer instead of just another suggestion. If you do in fact find a way to do that -- PLEASE -- tell us.

I think I want to know the answer to the same question

I have a site (www.hits4me.com) which provides free services to webmasters (like their own top 50 which I host for them). I'd like to add tell-a-friend to all these pages. I can't figure how to do this using Mailbits except by manually creating tell-a-friend links for all my members, and incorporating different linking codes. This is too much like hard work. There must be a way for me to have the same mailbits tell-a-friend link refer to
http://www.hits4me.com?topsite.asp?MID=119245 if it's referred to from that page or http://www.hits4me.com/topsite.asp?MID=119286 if it's referred to from that page etc.

Cool

Hey I am getting submissions already http://www.very-cool-stuff.com/ubb/smile.gif I know who you are http://www.very-cool-stuff.com/ubb/smile.gif Sorry I dont have the auto responder setup yet : ) Ok I have the new version up at http://www.randomfun.com/index2.html

This has the new window format. I think I am going to go with windows instead of frames. Like Steve said go for page views... anybody else have a comment on this??? I mean whats the diff if you click for a frame or a window?? Anyone else have a view on this?? With the windows I can show a new banner everytime http://www.very-cool-stuff.com/ubb/smile.gif

In my case I am just going add the mailbits link to certain high quality sights... I think... so it might not be as much work as linking to every sight. Or you could trick you viewers into actually referring your sight??? Would that be dishonest?? ....Damn I love that Joecartoon sight, just something about shooting cartoons, that makes my day http://www.very-cool-stuff.com/ubb/smile.gif

Please tell me a persons name and email address at Mailbits and I will do my best to get them to join and answer these questions or perhpas you can invite them to join us http://www.very-cool-stuff.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Iv'e never liked frames but this is surely a subjective and debateable issue. Engines don't like then either last time I checked. So you spend extra time creating doorway pages when I would rather be creating wacky and fun stuff.

And speaking of Joe Cartoon again which kinda segways to Dr. Primates great point about why and what he built his site for. Joe has a link in his "Store" for men's hair products. Liek toupeee/wig thingy and grow hair. Absolutely funny and wacky as IMHO this kind of product just doesn't fit his site/demographics. The 'unexspected" nature of a link like this is just very-cool-stuff http://www.very-cool-stuff.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Kid,

I love it! There's something so entertaining about being taken to a place you wouldn't normally visit. In the end, you end up learning, or being amused in ways you would't have anticipated.

Yeah, I think categories are going to be a must though. And I think you'll really need to work at creative ways to expand the site.

You might want to launch them into a set of frames with a small nav bar at the bottom which allows them to keep visiting random sites without having to close the new window repeatedly to start over.

I am running Netscape 4.7 for Mac, and it works fine.
