Unhappy DoubleClick offers advanced tracking technology

In an effort to more accurately gauge the spending habits of visitors to DoubleClick sites, the industry-lleading ad firm is to track surfers on a permission basis to monitor how much they spend online, and what products/services they buy.

The article:

This announcement will surely be controversial coming from DoubleClick, but Avenue A actually started a similar process in November of last year:

Comments?
Will this help increase ad rates, or simply launch a battle between privacy advocates and the online ad industry?
