Unhappy Custom error page. .htaccess or httpd.conf

1. I have a question about the Custom Error Page

In my .htaccess file, I have the line:
"ErrorDocument 404 /how/404error.htm"
where /how/404error.htm is the target file.

URL:http://dcw.corpmart.com/how/hahahahahahahahafhshvkdjvsdh.htm

After trial and error, I finally discover that the target file (ie: 404error.htm) cannot be TOO SMALL. Otherwise, page not find message will appear.... Then.. I try to find what is the min. size of the file required.... And I discover that the required file size for IE and NC are different!!

It is so interesting... But I doubt whether this occurs only in my server..

Can anyone tell me the reason why there is an error when the target file size is too small eg: 300 bytes?? Do u have such as experience?? Do u think it is because of my web server's setting?

2. Besides, as I want to install the CGI scripts which emulate Server Side Include capabilities... I need to edit the httpd.conf... but i can't find where is it... can i make the changes in .htaccess instead of in httpd.conf ?? Or do u have any other method which allow me to use SSI??

PS: I host in a free server which is CGI capable and it seems that there is no SSI supported

Well, I just tested on my server with a file called opps.html and all it had in it was the word "opps". Both IE/NC found the page with I 404'd the call. Total file size 6

btw: Apache 1.3.9/RH 6.2

The dastardly "favicon.ico not found" that you see in your error logs is actually Internet Explorer 5 at work. IE automatically looks for a file it thinks you should have whenever someone creates a bookmark or a shortcut to a page on your site.
hmmm... i got 11,700+ of these errors in last month, May's logs http://geekvillage.com/ubb/eek.gif

Yep, I used to get 1000's as well. I finally found me some time to make me one of those favicon.ico files. At least it makes your site stand out in the favorites....
