Default Google is now offering domain registration

Google now offers domain registration for $10 a year. This price includes private registration at no additional cost. That makes their price lower than many of those who have lower registration prices but charge extra for the private registration.

While private registration might have some advantages it also has some disadvantages. It will reduce the spam you receive, but there are many who won't deal with certain types of operations if they use private registration because it can look as if they are trying to hide.

Google is offering this domain registration for people who sign up for their Google Apps and don't have their own domains. Google takes care of all the work for them.

Right now they offer registration for .com, .net, .org, .biz and .info domains. Google says they plan to offer registration for other domains in the future.

Google has been an ICANN Accredited Registrar for a good while. But they have teamed up with GoDaddy and eNom for these $10 registrations.

Let's hope they get GoDaddy and eNom whois lookups sorted out then.

Going via domaintools, godaddy gives very sparse info now and for days, enom domains say that the whois server is down and directs you to another whois, which gives no more information because they can't find the server either

Other registrars have been nervous about this for a while, ever since Google became ICANN accredited. This looks like a very soft launch for that side of their business, but Google clearly has the infrastructure, reach and influence to completely transform both domain registration and web hosting should they choose to enter either of those industries in a big way.

I've got a feeling we'll be seeing GoDaddy and others offering much lower prices on private registrations soon. As many domains as I've got, that'd be enough to get me to switch.
