Default Table does not display properly(sometimes)

I'd appreciate some advice on how to fix the following problem.
The header on one of the new sites ( www.waterwater.ca ) I'm building is a basic table. Here's the code:

<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%">
<tr>
<td width="43%"><a href="index.html"><img src="images/header_slices/logo_waterwater_header1_r1_c1.gif" width="374" height="86" border="0"></a></td>
<td width="14%" background="images/logo_waterwater_bgslice.gif"><img src="images/logo_waterwater_bgslice.gif" width="3" height="86"></td>
<td width="43%"><img src="images/header_slices/logo_waterwater_header1_r1_c3.gif" width="340" height="86" usemap="#Map" border="0"></td>

</tr>
</table>

Basically, a 100% width table with 3 columns. First and third have sized images in them. The middle one has a width set at " * ". This way, it should resize to the visitor's screen size/resolution. In the middle cell I have a background image that matches the image in the 1st and 3rd cell. To accomodate Netscape, I also put in a 3 pixel wide image into the middle cell so that the bg image actually show up.

Problem:
When I view it in IE6, NS4 and NS6, I see a full header. However, SEVERAL people have told me they DO NOT see the middle cell at all. It's just a white space.

What am I coding improperly??

What resolution are you using when you look at the page? 800x600, right?

My guess is that it isn't the middle cell that doesn't show, instead it's the image to the left that is to short for the cell if you use 1024x768 pixels. 43% of 1024 = 440 pixels, and the image is only 374 pixels wide, which is what causes the white space.

A simple fix:

<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%">
<tr>
<td><a href="index.html"><img src="images/header_slices/logo_waterwater_header1_r1_c1.gif" width="374" height="86" border="0"></a></td>
<td width="100%" background="images/logo_waterwater_bgslice.gif"><img src="images/logo_waterwater_bgslice.gif" width="3" height="86"></td>
<td><img src="images/header_slices/logo_waterwater_header1_r1_c3.gif" width="340" height="86" usemap="#Map" border="0"></td>
</tr>
</table>
