Unhappy "Sort by memory usage" message on "top"

Does anyone know why the UNIX "top" command displays "$<5>$<3>$<2>$<2>Sort by memory usage$<2>" when I press the sort key, instead of just "Sort by memory usage"?

Sounds like your terminal settings are incorrect.

Or, maybe you should get another client. I use SecureCRT and it seems to display everything properly.

I am using SecureCRT, with "export TERM=vt100". This oddity with top happens on all the Linux machines I use.
