Default Google files for RSS ad patent

The application is for for embedding advertisements into syndicated RSS and Atom feeds.

Kanoodle and Pheedo had RSS ad insertion to websites prior to Google. AdSense introduced a beta version of RSS ad insertion this past May. Google is expected to face some challenges on the patent since they weren't first to use the process.

Seems like little more than a punt for Google. There's little to no chance that they could claim ownership over this technology - because of both prior art and because the technique is a common sense evolution of the feed system. Even before RSS, other search players were using similar techniques to feed ads into syndicated feed content. Even Moreover and other Javascript-fed news syndicators embedded and targeted ads dynamically into feed data.

If by some miracle they are awarded the patent, however, they'll completely clean up on royalty revenues given the amazing growth that is currently projected in the feed market. I guess that's why Google felt it worthwhile to try patenting their application of this process, as well as to protect particular minor elements that may be unique to their system.
