Default Antispam tools fighting HIV

This might sound strange, but antispam tools are being used to fight HIV. Here is a link to this very interesting article http://www.computerworld.com/softwar...tml?source=x06

I was surprised when this article showed up in my aggregator. I can see the similarities. Perhaps using this "shortcut" (using existing technology) they can find a cure.

I initially thought this article was going to document a distributed computing system in which an anti-spam software provider is also using customer computers to process data during idle time to assist researchers in finding a cure (think SETI and the other distributed computing experiements that were all the rage a few years back).

As it stands, the article still confuses me but, conceptually, I guess there are similarities. At the end of the day, if drawing this connection inspires researchers to think and to analyze data in a different manner then perhaps a discovery will take place which wouldn't have otherwise occurred.
