Default $20,000 car for $13.425?!?

http://www.perfectpresence.com/newcar.php

Perfect Presence is doing some sort of promotion where you have a 1 in 500 chance of winning a brand new car if you sign up for their hosting service for three months (with prepayment).

You get an entry for each shared setup you buy, and 10 for each dedicated setup.

I thought this to be an expensive promotion, and the math below confirms it:

If you bought 500 hosting plans (Tin Level) at the prepaid $26.85 for the three months, you would spend $13,425 and be assured a brand new car worth $18,000 to $20,000. Assuming you used a discover card or another cash back card, you could also earn $134.25 in cash back. The merchant processing fees are left as an excercise for the reader. I think that they are banking on people staying past the three months because Web Hosting is VERY profitable.

In any case, 1 in 500 odds is pretty good, even if you would never use the plan.

This humorous post intended to brighten your day, nothing more, nothing less.

Actually, the statistics don't work like that, because you don't get 500/500 chances, you get 500 times 1 in 500 chances, which a mathematician will tell you, is much less than 100%.

My maths is very rusty but I work it out at 0.632 (i.e. 63%) chance you will win a car.

But anyway back to the point, you're right about it being very very expensive.... something funny going on there.
