Default suggestions on a money making website

hi!
i'm thinking of making a website that earns money. Thing is...i actually don't know what topic to discuss on the site. I plan to make a web hosting referral site as to earn money but i think i have lots of competitors regarding the topic. So, if you guys can suggest me anything...a topic that can earn money...email me... no porn stuff please.

When I started out I think I did it wrong (although i'm making quite a bit now).

The trick is to specialize in a field you know lots about (or want to learn lots about). And then build a really good information resource on that topic. That way people who are interested in that topic will keep coming back and recommend it to their friends etc.

Take www.codeguru.com (C++ MFC programming). They get millions of page views per day - because everybody interested in this topic knows about the site - and keeps coming back again and again - and also keeps telling their friends and co-workers.

So find make a list of a few topics that interest you. Consider whether you know enough about the topic & consider whether they're enough people interested in the topic (don't be too specialized - make sure you pick something that is of interest to quite a few people).

Finally for each topic, look at the sponsors available. Obviously pay-per-click and banners etc. is one option - but you will make more (I make 10X as much) if you find pay per sale/lead sponsors which fit in well with your site content. Don't forget Amazon, Beyond etc. have big catalogs and you might find something there that fits in.
[another way to do this is look for sponsors first, and then find the topic].

Finally experiment and track everything. Learn by testing different approaches, banner/ad placement, etc. Sometimes things go counter-intuitively.

I have a page with 3 similar offers
(i) I get paid $3 per lead - lots of leads as this is the best offer for most people
(ii) I get paid $5 per lead - fewer leads as not as good an offer as (i)
(iii) I get paid $10 per lead - very few leads as only applicable for some people.

So I did a tesrt
Week #1 - Display offer (i) only
Week #2 - Display offers (i) & (iii)
Week #3 - Display offers (i), (ii) & (iii)
Week #4 - Display offers (ii), (i) & (iii) - I made a bad offer more prominent.

Guess which week worked best - actually it was week #4 by far. I have thought up various explanations, but I can't explain for sure. Traffic was roughly the same each week. It seems that more offers (within limits) leads to people thinking more of me as unbiased source - I'm not trying to "push" stuff on them. It also seemed that I got more leads for (i) when it was less prominent - perhaps this is because people thought it was a bargain - but I don't know for sure.

IMHO webmaster, web hosting, free stuff, and affiliate review sites have been done to death. It's hard to find a gap in the market on these topics, and you'll have a million competitors (including both well funded ones, and thousands of little ones who *****up the "traffic" in this area).

I wouldn't recommend these unless you really have something unique to offer. However there's some good sponsors in these categories - that work well on a general interest site (e.g. CoolSavings WS works very well on my general interest site).
