Default Attackers turning to fake online greeting cards

SurfControl PLC, an internet security vendor, says fake e-mail greeting cards use by attackers to get malicious software installed on computers is on the rise.

They say these fake e-mail greeting cards are up around 90 percent from last year and make up over 50 percent of all malicious e-mail that is sent.

Free e-mail greeting cards is one of the things that I have offered for several years. While people are still sending them, the percentage of people not opening them is really up. I know of others who offer free greeting card services who are having the same experience.

I'm with you on that.

Our free greeting card sites used to be hugely popular during major holidays. They first suffered about four years ago when self-propagating virii/worms were first packaged as fake greeting card attachments. Sending and reading rates have dropped quite steadily since, with the greatest drop certainly evident in read rates.

Hopefully the influx will reduce before the coming holiday season. It would be unfortunate to have our card creation work go to waste and visitors turn away from free ecards simply due to the actions of a few mindless script kiddies.
