Promoting a news site - geek/talk: Web publishing business discussion

I just opened a news site on Wednesday and have got about 250 unique hits for the first 3 days. I got listed in GoTo and Findwhat (haven't even had a single hit in 3 days form FindWhat yet) under every possible term (news, breaking news, headline news, conservative news, etc) and my staff has been posting there articles on other sites with links to mine. I sent out a press release, but I doubt it gets picked up anywhere. Despite all this traffic stays the same, or even declines some days.

What else can I do? Is there an PPC engine I should be in, trade links? Is there even anything else to do?

I don't know, luck maybe.

But since this topic is back at the top anyway, I have a delimia.

My http://www.sianews.com , that has much more content, a better design, more friendy and open atmosphere, and less ads, then all my competetors. However after blowing $200 in GoTo, posting on related message boards and newsgroups, setting up link exchanges - my unique hits have fallen from 300 when I opened at the end of June to 92 per day. Any suggestions?

Hi sianews

You seem to be doing many things right.

Do you publish an ezine or newsletter? Having your own opt-in list can yield excellent benefits for your business. Also, link exchanges with sites that have target markets simular to yours usually produces good results. Posting helpful information on other forums is yet another marketing tool you might consider using.

Business success usually happen because you do lots of little thing correctly. Ultimately, you succeed by helping people get what they want.

I had a newsletter up, but accidently deleted the database

. There were only 5 people on it though. I'll relaunch it next month. We have alot of link exhanges, I've e-mailed countless sites about it. I post in various forums on the same subject, with a link in my sig. We've won 2 awards in the past 3 days as well, but hits have been short lived frm both.
