Default traffic tip and webspace question

Hi, I want to thank you guys again for helping me with the new layout so far everybody loves it! Its funny I guess some other webmasters were linking directly to some of my old sub-pages so now with the frameless layout users at their site have been ending up at my site for some "odd" reason. http://www.very-cool-stuff.com/ubb/smile.gif hehehe http://www.very-cool-stuff.com/ubb/smile.gif

Just a suggestion for anybody, I find that the "refer your friends" type device on my site gets a lot of use and hopefully a lot of visitors from it as well. At least 1/2 of my mail each day is referrals, it is currently set up so that I recieve an email when it's used, which I'll probably be changing soon since its too much mail! The nice thing about the one I use is that it ask for one friend at first and then after one hits send "send" it ask for more friends, up to six. Often all 7 slots are filled, so if your looking for a possible way to get extra traffic you can try a referral service. I use the one at:

http://www.deadlock.com/refer

Does anybody know of any free webspace with cgi and ftp but with out banners? I know thats asking a lot but I know there is such programs out there. I already checked out http://www.portland.co.uk but I have to much traffic to use their services and I also dont have a domain name(I cant remember if they have cgi). Currently I'm getting approx 2200+ hits/day and that number is growing rapidly. I currently have space on netcolony which has 35 MB(34 MB more then my school account!!) but it has a banner and no cgi or ftp. If anybody knows of any others it would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.

lb2k,

First the question that I can answer off the top of my head, free space without banners, try xoom.com , xoom.com/home/ , last I checked they gave 11mb. Keep in mind you get what you pay for with "free" sites.

Second, the refer it, you can do your own search at
www.cgi-resources.com/ , and I think Steve here uses one listed at BIRDCAST Site Reader Recommendation Script: www.bignosebird.com/carchive/birdcast.shtml

Wait A Minute Computer Guru !!! Xoom.com now puts an ugly frame on top of every page !!! Watch out .

Two program offer no banners on their site . They are MYSP.com and Internations.com . Both of these sites are actually using the same free space engine . You can see this as their interface is the same . However there is something suspicious about mysp as they insert an automatic code inside all your page. I am using them and only recently noticed this . They only give you 7mb. As for internations , i just signed up yesterday . They offer a whooping 20 mb !!!

Yeah I know what you mean about you get what you pay for with free space. Well I checked out xoom and they now have a xoomBar on all of their pages. I also noticed that the xoomBar often doesnt overwrite itself so one ends up with a screen full of xoomBars. I think I may have found one that has some of what I would like, but not all. I'll have to check it out when I get home. I can no longer update my site at its current location since I'm over the quota. Of course they dont tell you when you're over you find out when time expires on the extended quota and you cant upload anything! So hopefully tonight, I can upload it to a new location and then all will be well, at least for a while.

I've checked out cgi-resources before, its really nice the only thing is I dont have cgi support on my accounts and their remotly hosted listings were recently deleted, I believe, so currently they only have a couple in there.

Hey Heartz how is going?

Whats was the address for internations? I tried internations.com and got a real estate company. And I'd rather stay away from "auto code." Thanks in advance.

RE: Xoom.com now puts an ugly frame on top of every page !!!

That's something fairly new!!! The quote that follows is from their site....
Beginning March 15, 1999, it ("The XOOMBar") will appear automatically at the top of all XOOM.com member pages enabling
us to provide Webpage builders with unlimited Web space and to fulfill compliance with our Terms of Service.

I review "free stuff" on a regular basis, only because I get asked about features and service issues on a regular basis. This once again illustrates how fickle free services can be, and it never fails that about the time I recommend a free service their service falls on it's face, or changes it's policy.

lb2k, unfortunately, I only know of free scripts for your need that run on cgi. Why not spend a few bucks, (in some cases less that $10) to get some space without the banners or ads, that supports cgi?

Sorry . It is internations.net

anyway as for the cgi , why not also open an account at hyper mart , tolerate their banner and learn . Late when the cash starts rolling in , get paid , add-free hosting .

FWIW...

I just read terms and conditions at http://MYSP.com/stuff/guidelines.htm

Don't see any mention of cgi support?
While today they have no ads on your page, what will prevent them from adding them later, once they get a membership base???

I would like to take my site to the next level ie domain name, space with all the features/ no banners...etc. But my current financial situation(sp?) prohibits such. Unless of course my page was to pay for it self through a nice reliable pay per impression ad service I dont think that would be possible in the near future.

One of the reasons I would like cgi support is so I could teach myself cgi/perl, since it appears that many design jobs require such skills.

Hi All,

Given the economics of ISPs that offer free sites I think this industry will always be in flux. I do think free sites are a nice way to start as noted here.

Iv'e got this new idea that might help both parties in a free situation. It's purely experimental and by mutual consent. It may work or it may go away but a 30 day test period for no more than 5 sites who can be hosted on any type of server as long as they can create a link as per my specs.

The service is a branded postcard service for your site. I host everything and will even create 6 special images for your site by mutual consent. Once again, this is experimental and by mutual consent. If this interest you, please send me private mail and post here on the merits of the idea. Send your e-mail to:

If you want cgi and no banners than www.icestorm.com is for you. It offers 3MB, cgi, and no banners. If you want to see a list of 200 of the free webspace providers out there then goto http://freesitex.com/homepage.html
If you want to see all the free domain hosting providers then goto http://freesitex.com/domain.html

Hope this helps
