CPA is great - if you have the right offer for your traffic.

Less targeted traffic (like humour / games) might struggle (although the free ipod banners are everywhere these days, so I assume that they convert a fairly broad audience).

It works just fine if the merchants and networks are honest otherwise CPC is far better than CPA.

It's no secret that 99% of the time a CPA campaign will only be successful if you are able to integrate the offer into related content. Basically, don't put up a banner for FREE Oprah Magazine Subscription on a HotRod site, because odds are, most likey not one visitor to that site has any interest in Oprah Magazine. Rather, try and find an offer out there related to the auto industry.

If you find the right offer for right audience, CPA offers can easily earn you more then even the best CPM offers. Selling your ad space on a CPM/CPC model can greatly limit your earning potential when you strictly stick to that mold. Integrating CPA links into related content is much more effective than simply rotating any and every CPM offer through your ad space without your audience in mind. With CPA, you have the freedom and choice of promoting offers that are directly targeted toward your audience. After all, no advertiser will ever know your audience better then yourself.

If you take the time to find offers that you feel would pertain to your audience and negotiate the best CPA/CPL payout, you should be successful with your CPA campaign. Potentially, far more successful financially then if you were to use the same ad resources on a CPM.

Also, don't forget to contact your affiliate manager. The affiliate manager should be able to let you know which campaigns are converting the best, what the best converting creatives are, and also let you know how others are successfully marketing the campaign. They are such a valuable tool, there for your use.

No matter where you ask, you will find a difference in opinion on this subject. Ultimately, it's up to you to know what works best for you. You will never know until you test. Make sure you are well informed before you just start throwing offers everywhere.

CPA (specifically per-sale or free trial with credit card) are IMHO the best way for a small affiliate to earn money online.

The reason is if you build a site around them, you can earn $20, $30, $50 or more in one go from one action.

If you can send highly targetted traffic (i.e people land on your page as a result of a search for terms related to the offer, and I don't mean the offer's trademarks, you have to be inventive) and experiment with different offers, then 1%, 5% or even 10% conversion is possible for some offers.

This means your earnings per visitor are high, and you can afford to pay to advertise your site.

But don't expect it to work if you send untargetted traffic or just stick up a few banners.

Exactly. The most important thing to make any CPA offer successful is TARGETING. If you can understand that and utilize it, you will more then likely be very successful and happy with CPA.

After you get the hang of basic affiliate marketing...you may want to look into SEO (Search Engine Opt.). There is a lot of money to be made there.
