Default Google gains market share again

I just saw a very interesting quote by Michelangelo

This sounds like something worth remembering. But most people probably have rather high goals when it comes to where they want to be in the search engine results.

On the surface Google gaining market share again might not sound like much of anything. After all this is the eighth consecutive month that Google has increased its share of the United States search market according to ComScore.

Digging a little deeper shows there are some points worth being noticed in the world of search. Changes are based upon comparisons between now and one year ago.

The latest figures are from March, 2006. They show that Google's share of the search market is more than Yahoo and MSN combined. That shows how important it is to do well with Google. This upsets people who hate for one search engine to dominate so much.

Naturally this can also be bad news for site owners who depend on search engines for traffic. If the majority of your search traffic comes from Google and you have good position in the search results, that can be nice. But if Google does something that causes you to drop in the results listings, then it could be a potential disaster.

Many would like to see the other search engines get a larger share of the market so one search engine isn't so much more important. Some find their listings are about the same with all the search engines, while others find that they have better positions in the search results in some engines than others.

Of course, as you know, it always helps to have several sources for traffic and not just depend on search engines as your only source of traffic.

In addition to Google gaining market share, the latest figures show that both Yahoo and MSN continue to lose market share. The Time Warner Network is also losing market share, with America Online being owned by Time Warner.

Another trend that continues is that Ask.com is still gaining market share. Possibly some attention should start being paid to Ask.com. They have said that they don't believe they can catch Google but they want to first catch MSN and then catch Yahoo.

Perhaps those running Ask.com should read that Michelangelo quote. Their aim might be too low. They should aim for catching Google rather than aiming lower and reaching that goal.
