Default Ad Client's Permissions

I am learning my way around selling ad space and I have a question I have not seen addressed:

Ad programs may offer different options for your client's control. I have installed phpAdsNew which allows me (admin) these options:

- Allow this user to modify his own settings
- Allow this user to modify his own zones
- Allow this user to link banners to his own zones
- Allow this user to define new zones
- Allow this user to delete existing zones

Others may differ, this is the only one I know (barely). My first reaction was to say, Sure! let them do it all. Is this a good idea? I wonder if it would even be expected or be considered as a selling point?

Basically my question is - What features should a client reasonably expect control over when purchasing and what do the experienced sellers offer?

PS: I have read most of the posts regarding selling ad space. If anyone wants to throw in some unheard pearls of wisdom, please do.

Good question Doug

Turn them all off but continue to permit them to log in and view their stats. Make sure you are running the final Gold of V 2 so they can obtain stats for a given date range.

Selling adverts is developing/building a long term relationship with you. Not the Admin feature Your ability to respond to an email request from an advertiser to change their creative will enhance your relationship.

Not to mention, they are paying you for this service and in my experience, advertisers are busy folks and don't have time to munky around in an admin. Also, in many years, Iv'e never been asked for the options to let them change creatives nor would I ever permit it.

Another factor is security, the integrity of your other zones, and the chance that the advertiser might insert a creative/link which was not part of the original deal and or offends your guests. Think auto download prompt

On the other side of the coin, if you want to try a self-service kinda service for advertisers and mark the price down then the features might be appropriate however Iv'e never done this and never will

HTH

Thanks Steve, just what I was hoping to hear. No reason to offer these features to clients who likely don't want to bother with managing ads anyway.

I have another related question for anyone who happens along: Is there any good reason why I should offer client served banners? I am thinking of control issues here. I don't want to worry about clients swapping out banners that don't meet site standards or inserting banners that are too large or small for designated zones.

I am planning to serve all banners myself. I don't expect much resistance to this. Could I be wrong?

I wanted to add, phpAdsNew is a nice piece of work. I have a popular open source php photo gallery and message board, but this is really nice. Great interface, super-simple install, full featured, kudos to the folks responsible.

You are correct, definitely serve all the banners yourself for all the reasons you mentioned. No direct advertiser should argue with that.
