Default Claria (Gator) to get out of adware business

They hope to sell their pop-up advertising business by June, 2006. Claria said it will only sell to a company that is in compliance with anti-spyware organizations. Claria is doing this to try to gain respect.

Several months ago Claria announced that it plans to concentrate on search. They have been testing personalized search for the past several months.

Gator had a very bad reputation. The name change to Claria didn't help change the very negative impression so many people had of them. They feel getting completely away from adware will make it possible for people to have a better opinion of them.

Claria wants to launch a beta of their personalized search technology next month.

i say that's a good step.
changing names was a good option but alone isn't a big deal, they should have done all in a row planed way.

This week Claria announced they will stop displaying pop-ups and other adware ads on July 1, 2006. They have told how to uninstall their software and said people should do it before October 1, 2006.

Claria said they will discontinue support for this software on October 1, 2006 and the software may no longer function properly after that date. They also said that users Web usage data will still be collected and sent to Claria until September 30, 2006 unless the applications are removed.

Here are two links. The first is to an article with more details about this. The second is a link to the Claria with information about their plans and on how to remove their software.
