Default Facebook generating approximately $40million a year from selling virtual gifts

Here's one to spark some inspiration in the lead up to the holiday season.

An analyst who has been investigating Facebook's "Gifts" marketplace, which operates similarly to an ecard site in charging people $1 to send images to one another, has estimated that the service has yielded somewhere between $30-$40 million in revenue for the social networking site in the past year.

Read more on his findings here:

Does this make you want to come up with a creative Facebook application to see in this year's festive season?

Wow, that's too much money for those little images. I saw someone selling an application where you could send coffee to your friend and it was up there for £50 ($100). It didn't have many visitors to it, but with a bit of promotion, who knows?

Well, according to an article, the average American spent $700+ in the 2011 holiday season. That number does not account for birthdays, other holidays, special moments and no reason gift spending. Another thing to keep in mind is that in 2010 Facebook had over 50 million users with incomes in excess of $100,000 per year.
