Thumbs down Tera-byte is down again :(

This time it appears to be routing problem -- if you run traceroute, at some point it says "network unreachable". It can actually get to Tera-Byte servers from some Canadian hosts (I use this site http://www.traceroute.org/ ), but not from the rest of the world. According to hitbox stats, this problem has been happaning for last two hours. This is the second downtime of longer than one hour for the past several days. I had better uptime when I was running my sites from home on a DSL line for crying out loud. http://geekvillage.com/ubb/frown.gif The worst part is, I can't even e-mail NOC since they won't get my e-mail until after they resolve the problem.

you should of got this email from 4webspace
Quote:
This message is being sent to all dedicated server customers of
Tera-Byte Dot Com. and 4WebSpace.

Please be advised that we will be performing maintenance on one of our
core routers starting at midnight (Mountain Standard Time) tonight. You
may notice some loss of connectivity to your server(s) during this time.
We do not expect the maintenance to take more than 30 minutes. Please do
not phone or email to report outages during this time since that would
only slow down the operation.

Sincerely,
Tera-Byte Network Operations Centre

Cool

Gee, my postcard site is down too http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

I sure hope this isn't a common experience with tera-byte.

Mine has been down for quite some time as I am just showing about 19 hits today. Should be hundreds by this time.

gambit.tera-byte.com (which hosts my site anime-skins.com) is up now, but it seems to be experiencing massive packet loss.

Thumbs down

singloon, yeah, I got that e-mail. This morning, after over 9 hours of my dedicated server being inaccessible from outside world. http://geekvillage.com/ubb/frown.gif

I also received this resonce from their NOC:
-----------------------------
We experienced a major router failure late last night. Engineers worked
on it all night and finally resolved the issue at 8:55 AM. We apologize
for the inconvenience this might have caused you.
-----------------------------

I'm not an expert in these things, but if you claim multiple backbone connectivity aren't you supposed to be immune to router failures? Unless all of your routers go down at once? And if their whole network is served through a single router with no redundancy, isn't it a major flaw reliability wise?

This is very disconcerting. Can we trust their reliability?

At least I only have one site hosted with them, and it's new and has little traffic.

I think one disadvantage that tera-byte has is their connectivity. They're not like dn.net, rackspace.com or dialtoneinternet.com who have like 8 redundant backbone connections. They're also located in Canada, but most of us are located in the US so there's more links along the way that can fail.

I've always been told that having a lot of backbones is good, but can an expert here comment: What's the quality difference between, say, 3 backbones and 8 backbones?
