Here an interesting article about click fraud being a threat to the growth of search engine advertising.
Some say the fraud is 10% to 20%. Others say it is less. The search engines say there is fraud but they are doing a good job of dealing with it. Quote:

while there is click fraud going on, I don't think it's 10-20%, that seems a bit high.
The problem with it, is it can be very hard to track. Ok, if you got 10 clicks coming from the Same IP then you got a pretty solid case. But one of the problems is, people who just slap together pages, advertiser with AdWords then think they are going to make a fortune. There have been tons of times I've been on a site, didn't find what I wanted, clicked onto a Adsense ad and went to a page that was like vomit being projected at my eyes. I'd stay on the page for about 5 seconds (enough time for the mini background file and all the clip art to load) then leave, not even bother looking for what I wanted because the page looked like it was made by an 8th grader who just got their hands on Frontpage Express. I've clicked on probably hundereds of Adsense ads in the last years or so (not my own of course) But I can't think of a single time I ever bought anything from one of them. Usually if I'm going to buy something online I know what I want, and where I want to get it. But also a lost of the ads are sort of misleading. For example, just today I was looking for a php script, and wanted an open source version I could easily modify. Went to a page, didn't have it, BUT there was an Adsense banner for a place claiming to have it, so I clicked on it, went to the site, and all the site was, was a site to pay $39.95 for a CD or various scripts, none of which I needed. So I left the page after being there for about 20 seconds |
