Trustsoft and MaxTheater Inc. sold anti-spyware programs under the names of Spyware Assassin and SpyKiller. They offered free online scans. Users were told they were infected with spyware when they weren't.
These two firms would then sell users programs for between $29.95 and $39.95 to eliminate the problem that they didn't really have. The Federal Trade Commission has fined the two companies a total of about two million dollars for selling these fake products and making false claims. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06006/633410.stm |
