Default Pre-roll, post-roll or product placement?

The following article provides a good, if simplistic, overview of where the online video advertising market stands presently and what decisions are currently being made to chart the way forward:

The article notes some impressive figures from eMarketer regarding the year-over-year growth rates in online video advertising that are certain to draw greater attention to effective video delivery systems, while challenging the belief that pre-rolls and simple repurposing of television content for the web is going to continue to lead the way.

I think pre-roll and mid-roll ads are what will catch on with longer video content. People are used to this format on television, and will make the adjustment on the web as well. Pre-roll won't catch on for short video content. Anything 4-5 minutes or longer, pre-roll is great.

Product placement for certain types of video will work well, and is likely an ideal solution if you can find willing advertisers.

I don't think post-roll will ever be anything more than a cheap, bargain alternative to pre-roll and mid-roll, with a fraction of the results.

All said, video ads cannot be the same as a TV ad. This is an entirely different medium, and it needs to be treated as such. 15 seconds or less. Engaging, viral content. Catchy and to the point. Targeted to the audience.
